메리라는 처녀가 있었죠

새들이 노래하기 시작했을 때

초봄에 피는 장미향보다 그녀는 더 달콤했지요

즐겁고 행복한 생각만 했고

아침 공기도 활짝 개어서 싱그럽기만 했어요

솔숲 사이 강물을 오르내리는 젊은 애인이 있었거든요

나무들이 이른 움을 트고 새들이 노래하기 시작한

어느 봄날에 찰리는 연인 메리와 결혼을 했습니다

When the fruit is in the wine

from the river in the pines
It was early in the morning
In Wisconsin dreary clime
When he ruled the fatal rapids
For that last and fatal time

하지만 초가을에 메리에게 말하죠

포도주가 익을 때 쯤이면

솔숲 사이 강에서 돌아올 거라고

그가 치명적인 급류에 휩쓸린 것은

황량한 위스콘신의 어느 이른 아침이었습니다

They found his body lying
on the rocky shore below
Where the silent water ripple
and the whispering cedars blow
Now every raft of lumber
That comes down the Chippeway
There's a lonely grave
that's visited by drivers on their way
They plant wild flowers upon it
in the morning fair and fine
It is the grave of two young lovers
from the river in the pines

소리 없는 강물이 잔물결을 짓고

삼목이 흔들리며 바람소리를 내던

아래쪽 어느 암석 해안에서 사람들은

그의 시체를 발견했지요

지금도 모든 뗏목들이 그 폭포를 내려가고 있어

사람들이 차를 몰고 오가는 그 길목에는요

외로운 무덤이 하나 있답니다

어느 활짝 갠 맑은 아침 날

그 무덤에 사람들은 야생화를 심었어요

그 무덤은 젊은 두 연인들을 위한 것이예요

솔숲 사이의 강 주변에 살던....
