My Grandfather's Clock

 

My grandfather's clock was too large for the shelf

So it stood ninety years on the floor

It was taller by half than the old man himself

Though it weighed not a pennyweight more

할아버지의 시계는 책장에 놓기에 너무도 컸어요

그래서 90년 동안 마루에 놓여 있었지요

할아버지 보다 더 큰 시계였어요

하지만 무겁지는 않았어요

 

It was bought on the morn of the day that he was born

And was always his treasure and pride

But it stopped, short never to go again

When the old man died

시계는 할아버지가 태어난 날 아침에 샀어요

항상 그의 보물이자 자랑이었어요

하지만 갑자기 멈췄고 다시는 움직이지 않았어요

늙은 그가 죽었을 때였어요

 

Ninety years without slumbering

His life seconds numbering

It stopped, short never to go again

When the old man died

90년 동안 쉬지 않고

그의 삶이 재깍재깍 숫자로 세어졌지요

갑자기 멈췄고 다시는 움직이지 않았어요

늙은 그가 죽었을 때였어요

 

My grandfather said that of those he could hire

Not a servant so faithful he found

For it wasted no time and had but one desire

At the close of each week to be wound

할아버지가 말하길, 그가 가진 것 중에

그토록 믿을 수 있는 봉사자는 찾지 못했다고 했었죠

시간을 낭비하지 않고, 하나만 바란다고도 했지죠

일주일이 끝날 때, 태엽만 감으면 된다고요

 

And it kept in its place, not a frown upon its face

And its hands never hung by its side

But it stopped short, never to go again

When the old man died

자기 자리를 지켰죠, 인상도 안 쓰고요

어깨에는 손이 달려있지 않았어요

갑자기 멈췄고, 다시는 움직이지 않았어요

늙은 그가 죽었을 때였어요

 

It rang and alarmed in the dead of the night

An alarm that for years had been dumb

And we knew that his spirit was pluming for flight

That his hour for departure had come

자명종이 울렸어요, 밤을 깨우듯이요

조용했던 세월을 위한 알람

우리는 그의 영혼이 날개를 달았다는 것을 알았어요

그가 곧 출발할 시간이라는 것을요

 

Still the clock kept the time with a soft and muffled chime

As we silently stood by his side

But it stopped short, never to go again

When the old man died

여전히 시계는 부드럽게 숨죽여 시간을 지켰어요

우리가 침묵으로 할아버지 옆에 서있을 동안에 말이죠

그러나 갑자기 멈췄고, 다시는 움직이지 않았어요

늙은 그가 죽었을 때였어요
